IDEAL FOUNDATION FOR RIESLING

Slate soils imprint wines with character unlike anywhere else. These soils developed during the Devonian period 350-400 million years ago. The dark, hard, and gray slate of the Bockstein; the soft, blue slate in Laurentiuslay and Goldtröpfchen; the red iron-rich slate of Schlangengraben; the blue slate layered with quartz of Mehring.

Some soils are the result of topographic changes such shifting riverbeds. In the Saarfeilser you find gravel and sand mixed into the foundation of slate.

Each soil has a particular, enormous influence upon its wine. But the thing which all slate-grown wines have in common is a fine minerality displayed as a structural element, more easily defined texturally rather than aromatically.

Cool climate, steep hills, slate soils are all conditions for great Rieslings. But these factors alone aren't enough. To bring the taste of a great site into the glass requires knowledge, skills, and ambition.
